Continuing Spring project tour series CREW Philadelphia is taking its members to tour the Curtis music institute, a project that only a handful will get a chance to visit.

Philadelphia’s Curtis Institute of Music, among the world’s pre-eminent music conservatories, embarked on an expansion program to build its first residence hall and an expansion of its practice and classroom facilities. This expansion triples the Institute’s size, making it the right time to adopt state-of-the-art facilities management practices.

The Institute engaged Athenian properties to determine the best facility management structure, and subsequently to initiate an effective campus facility management plan, streamlining and integrating maintenance for the campus. The engagement included completing a thorough conditions assessment of the existing campus facilities.

Below are a few notable key points about the project:

  • 9-stories, 100,000 square feet at 1616 Locust Street
  • Designed by Venturi, Scott Brown and Associates to achieve a LEED Gold certification
  • Ground floor offers dining services for residents and the entire Curtis community
  • 2nd through 4th floors are dedicated to music education, with 32 teaching studios, practice and rehearsal rooms
  • 5th through 9th floors provide residential suites for up to 86 students
  • Three-story high, 3,000 SF Rehearsal Room will accommodate the entire Curtis Symphony Orchestra
  • 5th Floor Terrace features views of St Mark’s Church and the Center City skyline, with a roof garden designed by Jon Carloftis
  • Every room in the building, including student bedrooms, is engineered acoustically to allow musical practice and performance at the highest level
  • Technology includes audio and video recording studios, wireless access throughout, and Internet 2 capability, which links institutions worldwide to provide for real-time remote teaching

Please remember, after Fall 2011 the institute will open doors to the students and staff but will not be open to public for viewing. So don’t miss the opportunity!
